Metric Glossary
Every metric we track, explained. Select any highlighted number across the site for instant context.
Efficiency
Expected points added per offensive play. Measures how much each play moves the team closer to scoring.
Percentage of plays that gain at least 50% of needed yards on 1st down, 70% on 2nd down, or 100% on 3rd/4th down.
Expected points added per pass play. Isolates the passing game's efficiency from the run game.
Expected points added per rushing play. Measures run game efficiency in context of game situation.
Average EPA per play during the first half. Reflects offensive efficiency before second-half adjustments.
Average EPA per play during the second half. Captures post-adjustment performance and situational play-calling.
EPA per play on passing downs (2nd-and-8+, 3rd/4th-and-5+). Measures efficiency in obvious passing situations.
EPA per play on standard downs (1st down, 2nd-and-7 or less). Measures efficiency when play-calling options are wide open.
Average points scored per offensive drive. Includes touchdowns (7), field goals (3), and safeties.
Percentage of offensive drives that result in a score (touchdown or field goal).
Average cumulative EPA generated per offensive drive. Sums all play-level EPA within each drive.
Total win probability added across all plays. Measures how much the team's plays shifted the likelihood of winning.
EPA per rush play allowed by the defense. Measures how efficiently opponents run against this defense.
EPA per pass play allowed by the defense. Measures how efficiently opponents pass against this defense.
Total number of offensive plays run in the game (pass attempts + rushes + sacks).
Percentage of offensive plays that are pass attempts (including sacks). Reveals run/pass balance.
Total passing yards gained in the game, including yards after catch.
Total rushing yards gained in the game by all ball carriers.
Combined passing and rushing yards gained in the game.
Percentage of pass attempts completed. Does not include sacks or scrambles.
Percentage of red zone trips (inside opponent 20-yard line) that result in a touchdown rather than a field goal or turnover.
Overall percentage of third-down attempts successfully converted into first downs or touchdowns.
Third-down conversion rates broken down by distance: short (1-3 yards), medium (4-6 yards), and long (7+ yards). Reveals where the offense excels or struggles on the money down.
Disruption
Percentage of opponent plays disrupted by tackles for loss, sacks, pass breakups, or forced fumbles. Calculated as (TFL + sacks + PBU + FF) / opponent scrimmage plays.
Percentage of offensive plays that gain 20+ yards (passing) or 12+ yards (rushing). Measures big-play ability.
Difference between turnovers forced and turnovers committed. Positive means the team wins the turnover battle.
Turnover margin weighted by field position and game context. A red zone interception counts more than a midfield fumble recovery.
Total expected points impact of penalties committed by the team. Negative values mean penalties cost the team points.
Composites
A 0-100 opponent-adjusted composite score summarizing overall game performance. Combines offensive efficiency, defensive disruption, and situational execution into one number.
A 0-100 composite evaluation of offensive line play based on sack rate allowed, stuff rate, line yards, and power success rate.
Signed difference between second-half TDI and first-half TDI. Positive means the team improved after halftime; negative means it faded.
Composite measure of defensive disruptiveness combining TFL rate, sack rate, pass breakup rate, and forced fumble rate into a single score.
Branded
Measures offensive and defensive line wear over the course of the game by comparing trench-related metrics (rush EPA, stuff rate, pressure rate) in Q4 vs Q1.
Yards gained in garbage time (win probability > 95% for either team) that do not contribute meaningfully to game outcome.
Success rate on high-leverage downs where the outcome significantly shifts win probability (WPA magnitude > threshold).
EPA cost of predictable play-calling, measured by how much efficiency drops when the offense runs into the defense's expected play type based on formation and down-distance tendencies.
Rate at which the quarterback resorts to scrambles, throwaways, or off-platform throws under pressure. Higher values indicate more frequent bailout plays.
EPA attributed to scheme execution and play design rather than individual talent or improvisation. Isolates coaching quality from player ability.
Special Teams
Percentage of rushing attempts stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage (0 or negative yards).
Adjusted rushing yards credited to the offensive line rather than the running back. Uses a formula that caps individual run contributions beyond a threshold.
Success rate on short-yardage rushing attempts (3rd/4th down with 2 or fewer yards to go, or goal-to-go). Measures ability to convert when everyone knows a run is coming.
Percentage of rushing attempts that gain at least 4 yards. Measures how often the offensive line creates viable running lanes.
Composite measure of defensive assignment discipline and gap integrity. Evaluates how rarely the defense gives up uncontested yards due to blown assignments.
